Jumping out of gear is another common complaint with transmissions that have high mileage. if the manual transmission jumps out of gear and into neutral you should first check the gear shifter and its attaching linkage for looseness or damage.. Over time, transmission mounts can become worn. this makes the entire transmission vibrate as the car moves over bumps and uneven surfaces, which can disconnect the engine from the transmission, thus putting you out of gear.. Broken gear linkage: there are nylon linkages used in the gear leaver where its attached to the transmission, over time these things wear out causing the gear to slip into neutral automatically( i personally think this might be your issue , but get it checked with a mechanic nevertheless). the bushes look like this..
This is due to a worn or broken synchromesh. usually if you're driving in third and suddenly lift off the transmission wil jump out of gear. i guess your car has over 100,000 miles and wear on the gear-knob?. If you have a toyota truck with a manual transmission with a considerable amount of miles on it, there's a good chance that you suffer from a common problem that these trucks have.. Gear pop-out causes and fixes. the gear pop-out problem comes from several issues which affect the engagement of the operating sleeve with the dog ring on the gear (for an explanation of op-sleeve/dog ring operation, see the synchronizer system tech tip page) , 'cold pop-out' and dog ring/operating sleeve damage being the two biggest issues.. cold transmission pop-out is an oil contamination.
